Best Time to See Whales in Juneau, Alaska (Complete Guide)

If you are planning a trip to Southeast Alaska, one of the biggest questions is when to come for the best wildlife experience. Juneau offers incredible opportunities to see humpback whales, orcas, seals, sea lions, porpoise, bald eagles, and more throughout the season. If you are still planning your trip, you can also browse our Juneau whale watching tours or learn more about why humpback whales migrate from Juneau

What Is the Best Time to See Whales in Juneau?

Summer time, when they travel from Hawaii and Mexico into Alaskan water to feed.

Juneau’s summer season is the most popular time for whale watching because migrating whales return to Alaska’s nutrient-rich feeding grounds. If you want a broader overview of the experience, read A Guide To Whale Watching In Juneau

Is the Morning or Afternoon Better for Whale Watching?

Whales are active all day long around Juneau, but the first trip of the day takes about 5 extra minutes to find a whale because we don’t already know where they are.

No matter what time you go, whale activity can be strong throughout the day. You can also explore more trip planning resources on the Alaska Whale Watch blog.

What Month Is Best to Go Whale Watching?

June-August are the months with the highest whale activity, but also peak tourism. Early in the year can afford fewer crowds and more seating on our boats.

If you want peak wildlife, summer is hard to beat. If you want a quieter trip, earlier season can be a great option too. For more on timing and seasonal conditions, see The Best Time Of Year To Spot Whales In Juneau and Weather and Conditions During Alaska Whale Watching

What Is the Prettiest Month in Alaska?

Every month in Alaska has something to make it beautiful, however June stands out to me as special because so many amazing things happen at the same time (also my birthday is in June). The Salmon Berries are growing everywhere, in mile wide patches, tart juicy berries that look like salmon roe and bring out all kinds of wildlife. Blueberries are also starting to ripen up. The days are long and sometimes sunny, the summer solstice has 18 hours of sunlight! And sea creatures! The waters are teeming with them. Humpbacks, orcas, seals, sea lions, even porpoise. Outside of marine mammals June also brings out the bloom of jelly fish, lions mane and moon jellies, as well as starfish, sea cucumbers, and ratfish. Bald eagles are also hunting ferociously in June as their hatchlings are starting to have a real appetite, which means we see them everywhere.

What Is the Best Month to Go to Juneau, Alaska?

April – September. The weather is milder, warmer, and sunnier. The wildlife is most active during these months. The winter can be beautiful too, we have ski slopes, and Mendenhall lake freezes over so we can walk to the face of the glacier, but the city is almost a ghost town, and all tours are waiting for spring.

What Month Are Orcas in Alaska?

Orcas, a rare sight in Juneau, are within Alaskan waters year round. A pod of orcas has a residency of about 500 miles, which they will rarely venture out of. Transient orcas can travel thousands of miles, but are almost always alone. Orcas are most active and observed most frequently in Juneau between May and August.

When Not to Go on an Alaskan Cruise

When the cruise ships aren’t running! The only real reason you shouldn’t go is if you can’t go. Any time of the year is amazing up here, but you might want to think about what it is you want to see when choosing the dates for your adventure. Start and end of season are less crowded, but lack some wildlife. You have a better chance of seeing the aurora outside of peak summer months too, simply because the sun shines less of the time. However peak summer months (June – August) have more wildlife everywhere, and more sunshine. You can see the salmon run, black bears, whales, and jellyfish during peak season.
